Most people are time poor and have that nagging guilt about not exercising enough. The choice of exercise is also a challenge because complex activities require time. The where and when it can be scheduled into an already overloaded life is also a hurdle.

Well High Intensity Interval Training or HIIT is a multi-faceted solution. HIIT is a great way to start changing your life for the better even for people that are intimidated at the thought of going to a gym. The exercise can be simple, the place is where ever you are and the time is as little as 25 minutes a week!

Start by simply choosing one exercise - say sitting on a hard chair then rising (a squat). Then sit and stand as many times as you can in 30 seconds rest for 15 seconds then repeat 10 times. Try and improve the repetitions as your fitness improves.

A HIIT session can be as simple as one exercise to a circuit of exercises and has great benefits that include:

  • any choice of exercise is fine -providing it raises heart rate;
  • the amount of time dedicated to exercise is not excessive or overly intrusive;
  • exercises can be done anywhere;
  • HIIT can repair your metabolism by reducing inflammation, forcing the body to improve its ability to use and burn energy;
  • HIIT is the most effective way to burn off belly, back and love handle fat;
  • HIIT burns fat at a faster rate, utilize energy better during workouts, and continue to burn calories long after your workout is done. (A phenomenon known as EPOC, or excess post-exercise oxygen consumption;
  • three HIIT sessions a week has been prescribed by physicians for fat burning.

Joining a gym or playing sport is not for everyone but exercise is essential for humans. HIIT mimics the activities essential for life where ancient human survival involved repetitive short bursts of intense action followed by rests. However, humans are also social animals and maintaining the momentum might be easier with a buddy -hence why we like to exercise in groups and go to gyms.

So, if you commit to working out consistently, as well as adjusting dietary habits outside of the gym, you will begin to feel and notice the results your body is making within a few weeks.
