Changing a bad habit is an almighty challenge and many people use the same method over and over again without success. The New Year’s resolution, Monday start the diet day, the six-week challenge etc are all helpful but if you don’t focus on what needs changing the date you start cannot work.

So how do you go from sedentary to active? Well it all comes back to what is going on in your head. Like previously noted instant gratification is a very powerful drive and many people relate exercise as the opposite of gratification -pain. In fact, future rewards are not as powerful as an immediate hit.

What do we consider instant gratification?

  • Comfy clothes and shoes;
  • Cushy beds with cosy covers;
  • Long hot showers or baths daily;
  • Air conditioning;
  • What do we consider uncomfortable?
  • Sweating;
  • Being too hot;
  • Being too cold;
  • Being out of breath;
  • Carrying heavy things;
  • Messy hair;
  • Sore muscles;
  • Blisters;
  • Getting wet in the rain;
  • Getting up when it’s cold;
  • Going out at night when it’s cold;
  • Getting dirty;
  • How I look in gym gear;
  • Not having the same skills as others;
  • Looking foolish and
  • Being uncoordinated.

Quite a list but almost every thing that is goal focused requires some intermediate ‘pain’. Like completing a course, buying a house or even becoming a parent has some discomfort. In fact, often the more discomfort the greater the reward. So, change the mindset from ‘I hate this instant pain/irritation to’ pain is part of the reward’ -always.

How to turn instant pain/irritation into reward:

  • Chose ANY physical activity that you enjoy. Gardening and volunteering that has active componentry could also be included. Don’t feel compelled to do ‘popular’ exercise just focus on moving.
  • Deliberately down play the pain and focus on the reward. Think of child birth -hideous pain but the baby is worth it, or studying for exams - the qualification is the prise. Before you say they are different -your health is that important!
  • Turn the tolerance of pain/irritation into an achievement. As noted all achievements have discomfort and often when the goal is achieved people will brag about what was endured -part of the achievement was getting through the tough periods.
  • Learn to delay instant gratification by thinking of other goals you have achieved and persevered through. Looking your best through exercise is a fabulous goal because it enhances your mood, improves your bodily functions, offers opportunity for new friendships and keeps you strong.
  • Exercise appears to be delayed gratification because of all that pain and discomfort. However, looking at yourself in great shape every day is actually an instant gratification!
