Gyms are very strange, I mean they should be a haven for people that want to get in shape but instead they are full of people that are already svelte. Lots of women wont venture into the weights area because they feel overwhelmed and many men would rather eat glass than join a group class. Fortunately, things are changing and people are learning that exercise is gender neutral and that all forms of exercise is beneficial. Not only is exercise neutral it also cross pollinates.
Why men need cardio:
Every woman will recall how frustrating it is going on a diet with a male partner. He loses twice what she loses and he eats more and exercises less! One answer -testosterone. Men have up to 10 times more testosterone than women so even when men are doing nothing their bodies need fuel. That is because men have more muscle so the only way women can enjoy that benefit is by lifting weights -and building muscle.
However, men have an Achilles heel too -men have no place for fat to go. Women can safely -if not happily – gain weight on bottoms, hips and thighs with little danger. This is because the fat is used by a woman when she has children and that fat surrounds no organs. Men have less need for fat so when men get fat it is far more dangerous because the fat surrounds organs in the abdomen and this is dangerous visceral fat. As men age their hormones drop too and men need cardio to help control the fat that is life threatening.
Why women need weights:
Women worry that lifting weights creates bulk -that bulk is not from the weights it’s from the fat. The body has bone then muscle then fat then skin -if you lose weight at the same time you weight train you must look thinner. However, if you eat more and weight train then you will look bulky -the trick is losing the fat. Also, as women get older they find it harder to lose weight, well the more weight training the easier it is to maintain a healthy weight.
People often say they have little time but seemingly find time to partake in activities that are bad for them. You don’t need to spend a lot of time exercising instead choose activities that cover the primary human needs of resistance training three to four times a week and some cardio activity like brisk walking daily. Whatever the choices make sure you love them so they take over bad habits and become a new loved way of life.
Next week ……. How to change your habits -eating and drinking.
Women need resistance and men need cardio
